Rethinking Mono - The Zenteek Stereoize Approach
· by Kjell
If you have ever tried to "stereo-ize" a mono signal you know that most try to simply create width by applying a single effect on the entire spectrum and blurring the side energy in the process.
This is okay, as many don't expect any wonders from this technique anyway. It is a creative effect after all. So i tried to rethink this approach and thought about the spectrums order of relevance, instead of simply throwing Haas on everything. Lower end material - that's mono. Low-Mid is were the body sits, midrange are most lead instruments, mid-high we have vocals and synths, and everything past that is usually cymbals and sparkles.
So I split the spectrum into 5 bands and applied a different amount of widening to each - none at the bottom, subtle in the mids, more open at the top. Like a full range exciter with a slope, going all the way down to 200 Hz, each with its own character.
I hope you enjoy this approach. We are all experimenting after all, analog or digital. I'll let you be the judge - but what I can say is that it sounds considerably more musical than anything I've heard from similar tools. :)
